Our concealed door closers comply with the following fire safety, accessibility and performance criteria, regulations/certification:

CE mark

Our controlled door closers carry the CE mark. CE marking indicates compliance with EU legislation for products falling under the New Approach Directives. BS EN 1154 and BS EN 1155 are harmonised European standards, and compliance with either supports the CE mark. For fire/smoke door closers, this requires independent verification by a notified body, covering type-testing, factory inspection and ongoing production control. 

Our controlled door closers have passed independent fire testing to BS EN 1634-1 for one-hour and half-hour, latched and unlatched doors, and are manufactured under BS EN ISO 9001 systems.

UKCA mark

Our controlled door closers carry the UKCA mark. UKCA is the UK’s conformity mark for construction products sold across the UK, designed to align with products already carrying the CE mark. Concealed door closers have been independently assessed by a UK conformity body.

ISO 9001

All Samuel Heath door closers are manufactured under systems compliant with ISO 9001. This international quality management standard governs factory production control.

EN 1154

Our controlled door closers comply with EN 1154. This standard sets out product types, classification, test cycles, performance requirements and marking for door closers. Key requirements include: power size 3 or above for fire doors, 500,000 opening/closing cycles without loss of performance, and fire testing of a representative model to BS EN 1634-1.

EN 1634

Our controlled door closers have been independently tested to EN 1634 and meets requirements for one-hour and half-hour fire doors. This European standard replaced BS 476 for fire resistance testing, offering more realistic performance measurement. BS EN 1634-1 covers fire door testing specifically.

BS 476

Samuel Heath door closers have been independently tested and meet the requirements of BS 476 for one-hour and/or half-hour fire doors. Still widely used in the industry, this British Standard covers fire resistance testing of doors, alongside BS EN 1634-1.

Certifire approval

Our door closers are the only Certifire-approved jamb-mounted door closer. Certifire is recognised by UK and overseas regulatory authorities and requires successful fire door testing, ISO 9001:2000 certification, independent audit testing against British and European standards, and a detailed field of application document. This gives specifiers and building managers added confidence in its use.

Opening / closing cycles

Samuel Heath door closers are tested to 500,000 opening/closing cycles, the requirement stipulated by the main performance standards. Cycle testing is a key indicator of a door closer’s durability and reliability in service.

Accessibility 

Our door closers are designed to aid compliance with accessibility requirements for opening force. Legislation such as the Equality Act and SENDA places duties on providers to make premises accessible to disabled people. The key consideration is opening force, governed in the UK by BS 8300: 2009 and Building Regulations – Approved Document M, Section 4 in Scotland, and Part R in Northern Ireland. These state the opening force at the leading edge should not exceed 30N between 0 and 30 degrees, and 22.5N between 30 and 60 degrees.

No manual door closer can itself claim compliance, since requirements apply to the complete doorset as fitted, taking into account door width, seals and hinges.

Our two-mechanism design holds energy primed after initial compression, isolated until needed for closing and latching, keeping opening force low early on. A second, milder mechanism closes the door from wider angles. After the first 4 degrees, force reduces, with efficiency constant across the first 60 degrees, unlike other closers, where force increases and efficiency becomes inconsistent. This satisfies BS EN 1154 and supports Building Regulation compliance.
