Whitehall Court, London

Whitehall Court, London

Set within the heart of Westminster, this apartment renovation demonstrates how sensitive interior architecture can honour historic fabric while responding confidently to modern living.

Delivered by Huntsmore, this Grade II* listed project required a careful balance: respecting the Victorian grandeur of the building while delivering a home tailored to a client who knew the space intimately.

The client’s brief was clear and considered, shaped by over ten years of lived experience. Huntsmore’s approach was to work with the building rather than against it, allowing its history to guide design decisions while improving usability and flow.

Specification shaped by context

“Our aim was to design interior architecture that felt unquestionably contemporary, but never disconnected fom the history that surrounded it.” Eamonn Agha, Huntsmore

This dialogue between old and new is established immediately on entry, where a bespoke green terrazzo floor mirrors the patterning found in the Victorian communal hallway. It is a restrained but deliberate gesture that draws the building’s heritage into the apartment itself, setting the tone for a scheme that feels layered rather than imposed.

Bathrooms were reconfigured and redesigned. The larger en-suite, which lacks natural daylight, was conceived as a lighter, reflective space, pairing Carrara marble with Samuel Heath’s Landmark Pure brassware in Urban Brass Matt Lacquered. In contrast, the smaller en-suite benefits from natural light within the shower and adopts a darker, more masculine palette, using the same collection but in City Bronze, also a lacquered finish.

A considered approach to finishes

Across both spaces, a key consideration was how the brassware finishes will keep over time. The client wanted to approve the aesthetic at installation and have confidence that it would remain visually consistent over time. Lacquered finishes offered control and predictability, ensuring the brassware will not patinate or change, aligning with the client’s needs.

Samuel Heath was selected not only for the quality and precision of its fittings, but for their ability to sit comfortably within a historically rich setting. That choice carries a deeper resonance: the neighbouring Liberal Club, of which the client is a member, also features Samuel Heath fittings, creating an unexpected thread of continuity within the wider context of Whitehall Court.

Elsewhere, Huntsmore’s in-house team designed and manufactured the bespoke joinery, tailoring proportions and detailing to the character of each room. This careful calibration continues in the tonal shifts across the apartment: darker, more atmospheric spaces overlook the central lightwell, while the living room – with expansive views across Horse Guards Parade – is open and bright, grounded by pale oak chevron flooring that runs continuously beyond the bathrooms.

The result is a calm, confident interior where contemporary fittings, durable materials and historic context are held in careful balance.
