Landmark Industrial, Boca Raton home, Florida

With endless hours spent searching for specialty pieces, Erin A. Cantu creates an impressive Boca Raton home with soul.

The brief: create a long term home for a young family with three children - and one very fluffy golden retriever. Set on a 2.6 acre lot with 13,000 square feet to play with, this custom real estate home in the prestigious neighbourhood of central Boca Raton, Florida had the potential to be the most incredible show home. Wellington-based interior design studio Erin A. Cantu Interiors, however, was eager to create a home with much more soul.

From the starting line, the goal was to create spaces that would serve the lifestyle of the family that could be used without fear of their longevity. Having a clear understanding of the family’s lifestyle was key in creating the architectural layout throughout this 6-bedroomed home. A two-story structure made the most sense for convenience, with main living situated on the first floor and sleeping spaces on the second. The open living concept was also planned to accommodate the social habits of the youthful family – particularly the eat-in kitchen with adjacent family room which opens directly to the main covered loggia. A large club room space equipped with a full bar was designed to make watching sports events comfortable & exciting for family and friends – a must have, alongside the indoor basketball court, which was an added bonus for the sports-loving family.

Custom millwork by Max Urban was an integral part of the process in setting the foundations for a warm neutral palette, achieved by variations of white oak and walnut. A collection of custom cabinetry, ceiling beams, custom doors and bath vanities amongst several other pieces allowed Cantu and the team to easily integrate later furnishing selections that would shape a cohesive aesthetic.

The design development phase involved countless hours to seek out materials, finishes and pieces that were unique, in order to create a ‘lived-in’ feeling - a highly personal approach that comes as standard from the first-class studio. Cantu and the team began the sourcing journey by visiting the artisan suppliers in their own spaces in order to feel the most inspired. A custom dining table by Ford Standard, customized chandeliers by Lindsey Adelman and commissioned artworks depicting subverted perceptions of rap icons were amongst the cherry-picked portfolio of bespoke pieces that showcase specialty, while also shaping the household mantra of ‘less is more’.

The astounding triple-shower bathroom required a clear vision in order to make the best use of its generous space. The use of every neutral colour alongside the integration of interesting textures was key in achieving its relaxed feel. “It was imperative that we used the design, finishes and furnishing selections to tie it all together” recalls Cantu. A large vintage rug, plaster side table matte white resin accessories all add to the eclectic mix. “Despite how cozy it looks, the bottom line function here is a primary bathroom. Our goal was to find a way to soften the hard surfaces that are necessary for the functions of a bathroom and make it feel warm and delicious.”

One aspect of the vision that Cantu was not willing to compromise on was the stone wall separating the bathtub and shower. The marble used was Breccia Capri marble, which took Cantu’s team months to find the perfect slab. The large stone partition forms a large niche inside the shower that is private, while creating the perfect opportunity to showcase the beautiful natural stone. In order to create the ultimate shower experience, Cantu opted for three thermostatic shower trims, dual showerheads and a ceiling rainfall showerhead from the Landmark Industrial collection by Samuel Heath.

“When I saw the Landmark Industrial collection, I knew it was the perfect choice for this primary bath” says Cantu. “We all know that there are so many ways to add ‘more’ but our goal was to make choices that showcased specialty pieces, like the Landmark LMK Industrial collection, without overshadowing them with other elements. The simplicity of the design but attention to the knurled details & exposed hardware make the collection look so impressive without feeling overdone. The sense of luxury is there but with a humble presence.”

With endless hours spent curating the perfect collection of unique pieces, Erin A. Cantu and team have crafted an aesthetically beautiful home that a family can really ‘live’ in.
